Career Goals

Last updated September 2019

2 Year

My two-year career goals all center around my family, my health, a fulfilling job, and time spent outdoors. At 31 years of age, I’ve experienced enough to know what is most important in life: time spent with family and friends, meaningful work, and the physical and mental health to enjoy my favorite activities.

First and foremost, I want to have a job that allows me to spend plenty of time with my wife, Erin, and my twin sons, Gatlin and Griffin. However, there is much more to this goal than just time spent together. I also want to have a career that allows me to provide for my entire family. In two years, I hope to be well on my way to achieving this goal so my wife can start to think about spending more time at home with the boys. My goal is for my wife to be a larger part of the boy’s lives as they get closer to school age, and she desires that as well. Two years from now I plan to be on track to achieving this goal between the years 2024 and 2028.

Next, I want a career that fulfills me. I want to be an integral piece in an organization that I believe in, surrounded by people who enjoy life and want to get the most out of it. I can think of no better place than the Outdoor Industry to find this career. However, I’m still trying to determine what type of position my skill set is suited for. I’m currently seeking a career in the areas of operations, marketing, copywriting, and retail planning. The most important factors when making this decision is that I believe in the work I’m doing, the position pays enough to take care of my family, and I’m allowed free time to recreate with friends and family.

In two years, I also hope to be a homeowner in my first family home. Ideally, this would be a small property with a fenced-in yard that needs a little bit of work. This is not our “forever” home, but something we can spend the next 3-8 years in.  The yard is essential for the dogs and our lifestyle. Preferably it would be in the south or west Denver-area, although I’m open the possibility of moving to a mountain town or other areas of Colorado.

Finally, my goal is to increase the focus on my physical health in the next two years. Some areas of growth would be meal planning, consistent gym time, and daily cardio. I’ve always lived an active lifestyle, but as I get older and my metabolism slows down, I understand I’ll have to do more to stay healthy. In order to accomplish this goal, I must immerse my entire lifestyle from work to family time in healthier habits. That means taking the time for mental health as well, because a healthy mind is the key to a healthy body.

In conclusion, in two years I hope to be well on my way to providing for my entire family by working in a career that fulfills me not only based on the content of the work, but the character of the people. I want to continue to be surrounded by people who enjoy being outdoors, so that we can share that passion with others. In order for my wife to stay home and take care of our twin boys, I will need a career that pays enough to sustain our modest lifestyle and the purchase of our first home.

5 Years

My five-year goals are an extension of the two-year goals with an enhanced focus on establishing myself in my professional career. In five years, I hope to be working in a leadership position at a purpose-driven outdoor company or non-profit that:

  • Challenges me to grow every single day and fulfills my need to work hard and play hard.

  • Allows me the freedom to spend time with my wife, Erin, and twin boys, Gatlin and Griffin. I don’t want to miss the important life moments and events because I’m working. That said, I don’t mind working outside of normal hours to get my work done.

  • Pays me enough to take care of my entire family. My goal is for my wife to not have to work in five years, if she still desires, so that she can spend as much time as possible with our twin boys. This would also allow her the freedom to take a job she loves, over one she needs, or none at all.

  • Encourages others to get outside and responsibly enjoy all of the wonderful benefits of time spent outdoors.

I understand this will take a tremendous amount of hard work, but I believe with the right opportunity I can make an immense positive impact. Success in my career means being highly effective at what I do and helping enrich as many people’s lives as I can in the process.

In five years, my next goal is to be preparing to purchase our second, and possibly “forever,” home. Unlike our first home, the goal is to have a larger, more open living space with at least one guest bedroom and considerable property. The idea is that our first home would be a springboard into our second home by creating equity through property value and renovations. Five years is likely an aggressive goal for our second home, but I hope to at least be in the planning stages at that time.

Another large goal of mine in five years is to travel more with my family. This goal is two-fold: 1) to go home to the Atlanta-area to spend time with my extended family, and 2) to travel internationally with my wife and kids for rich cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, and leisure. Travelling is something I was fortunate enough to do growing up, and I want to be able to provide that for my children.

Finally, in five years I want to be in the best shape of my life. To do this I need to stay active 5-6 days per week, whether that means going to the gym, on a long hike, or playing 2 hrs of basketball. I would also love to get back into playing organized adult league baseball, a sport I very much enjoyed playing growing up. For me to accomplish my health goals, I need to work together with my wife, Erin. A healthy lifestyle for both of us will lead to longer, more fulfilled lives.

In conclusion, in five years from now my goal is to have firmly established my identity as a leader in the outdoor industry, with a fulfilling job, family financial freedom, exceptional health, and thinking about purchasing my “forever” home.
